I’ve decided that I’m going to do a CKXU Spotlight every week. Where I tune into a show, pick a song that clawed its way into my heart and rate the show (legit rating or not). This week the spotlight is shined upon “Non-Stop Psychotic Cabaret”.
The show is hosted by Martine Ménard and Evan Van Reekum both musicians and lovely specimens of human beings. The show features the very best in punk rock to garage but it is the dialogue between this couple that make this show amazing. Did I mention that they are a good-looking couple? Not only that but both of them play in bands you wish you were in (at least I do) the Myelin Sheaths (Martine) and the Moby Dicks (Evan). The show happens Wednesday nights at midnight to 2 AM. Make sure to tune in on CKXU 88.3 Fm or http://www.ckxu.com.
On tonight’s show Evan was unfortunately in Calgary for a Moby Dicks show at the Ship’n’Anchor in Calgary. So Martine was left to her own devices. Endearing moments where: when she just made a one syllable sound for at least a minute, when her background music kept cutting off and when she found a new background music. I truly enjoy it when CKXU DJ’s have background music to go with their dialogue. Charming.
Song: Baby Don’t Go
Artist: Dum Dum Girls
Bio: The band Dum Dum Girls was lead by a chick named Dee Dee and started out as a solo project. The name Dum Dum Girls is a reference to The Vaselines album, Dum Dum and Iggy Pop’s song, Dum Dum Boys. She self-released the first album on her own record label Zoo Music. Dee Dee would later turn to friends to expand the project. In comes the girl gang: Jules (guitar and vocals), Bambi (bass) and Frankie Ross (drums and vocals). The band is driven by Dee Dee’s writing and she collaborates on few tracks. If you want a further account of their story visit their Sub Pop page.
I promise you don’t have to wear a leather jacket to join in on the fun.
The show gets a rating of 5 out of 5 cigarette stacks.
